Parenteral Administration of Medications

(Injections)

 

Introduction to Intermussular, Subcutaneous, and Intradermal Injections. The instruction and training will include:

  1. Pertinent anatomy and physiology appropriate to the procedures.
  2. Choice and use of equipment.
  3. Proper Techniques Including Sterile Technique.
  4. Hazards and Complications.
  5. Post treatment and test patient care
  6. Emergency procedures
  7. California law and regulations for medical assistants
  8. Satisfactory performance of ten each of intramuscular, subcutaneous, and Intradermal injections.

 

This program is designed to:

  1. Understand the procedures and sterile techniques used to prepare and administer medications via the parental route,(through the skin)
  2. Accurately identify anatomical sites utilized to administer parenteral medications.
  3. Demonstrate the correct principles and procedures used to administer medications using the Intradermal, Subcutaneous, and Intramuscular routes.
  4. Satisfactory following the “five rights” of safe drug administration.
  5. Follow safe techniques to prevent accidental transmission of hepatitis and HIV, (AIDS).

 

Course Schedule

  1. Course Introduction; lecture on the choice and use of equipment; preparation of medication; sterile techniques; patient identification; and the “five rights.”
  2. Lecture on the pertinent anatomy, physiology, and techniques appropriate to Intramuscular Injections. Practice techniques of intramuscular injections and performance of four of the intramuscular injections.
  3. Lecture on the post and test patient care; hazards and complications; safety and emergency procedures; Performance of six intramuscular Injections.
  4. Lecture on the California law for medical assistants; pertinent anatomy, physiology, and techniques appropriate to Subcutaneous Injections. Practice techniques of Subcutaneous injections and performance
  5. Practice techniques of Intradermal Injections and Performance of ten Intradermal Injections; and a comprehensive quiz on the Parenteral Administration of medication

Course Length

 

  • 4 hours a night
  • 1 night a week
  • 5 weeks

 

Home Work Time Required

 

  • 1-2 hours a night 2-4 nights a week

A short quiz will be given on each subject. Passing score for quizzes will be 80%
